It’s about Steve Marshall, a professional magician who has been living his childhood dream of entertaining children of all ages, all over the world, for more than 30 years.

It’s about choosing one thing and sticking with it, believing in it, practicing it, and learning how to adapt so you can live your dream.

It’s about change that comes unexpectedly and forces you to really think about your life, make changes, adapt, and continue on.

In 1998, Steve Marshall packed up everything he had in Florida and moved to Japan to continue his already successful career as a comedy magician while, at the same time, having to adjust to a totally different culture. He has been living and performing there ever since.

Japan has given Steve so many opportunities and today he can add published author, actor, director, songwriter and painter to his resume. As a matter of fact, Steve also achieved celebrity status in Japan appearing in national TV commercials and TV shows both as a magician and a comedic character actor. One show that Steve was a guest on, he was called the “Ambassador of Magic from the USA,” a name that he has been associated with ever since.

The recent earthquake in Japan affected the lives of many. Although Steve and his family were safe, immediately following the earthquake all of Steve’s work was cancelled. Fortunately, he was able to book shows in the USA, and for three weeks, he returned with his family to Florida. During this time he also added a new title to his resume, magic lecturer.

In September of this year, Steve will be returning to the USA for his first major tour of his home country in almost 14 years. He'll start in Florida and travel up the East coast doing a few public shows and 17 lectures for different magician's organizations. Steve will be accompanied by his friends and fellow RIngling Bros. Clown College alumni, Billy Scadlock and Nic Beery. As a matter of fact, in the early 80's, Steve and Nic drove almost the same route as this tour will take when they were clowns on the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

"Sayonara to Hello" is a documentary that will chronicle Steve Marshall as he makes his way back to the USA, performing, presenting magic lectures, and continuing his career in the country of his birth where, today, he almost feels like a foreigner. The film will also parallel the first major tour that he ever took as a Ringling Brothers clown fresh out of Clown College in 1983. With archived footage of that tour, combined with his present journey, this documentary will dig deep into what it takes to succeed 30 years in a profession that is far from what most people would consider “normal.”

A ruthless drug dealing pimp meets his match in the form of a seven year old girl who won’t let anything stand in her way of selling cookies for her troupe. “The Goon and the Gamma Scout” was conceived and filmed by the Motion Picture Production I class of St. Augustine’s College, taught by Asst. Prof. J. Brandon Johnson. The college’s Theatre/ Film program is committed to educating majors in the film process. Eric Barstow will be graduating in May 2011.

“Expression Tunnel” (4 min.) Jason Rizzo

“The Expression Tunnel” is a State of Mind not a Place.

Labor“A Labor of Love” (13 min.) Cara Biasucci

Poetic and picturesque, this is the portrait of one lobstering family and the village they’ve called home for generations.

GD“The Great Dictator” (8 min.) Nancy Kalow

This film documents “dead media” and a unique collection of audio recording machines exemplifying industrial design in the pre-digital age, including wax cylinder, wire, and magnetic dictating machines. The abundance and creativity of 20th century audio engineering is showcased: the machines range from ungainly Thomas Edison devices through streamline moderne chic and up to lightweight plastic boxes. In those “Mad Men” days, the boss-secretary relationship was grounded in the unquestioned authority of the male “dictator” who recorded a letter to be typed up by the (female) secretary.

A brief look at the life of a 16 year old prostitute living in Havana, Cuba.

A Polish woman and an Argentine man meet at the airport on their way to an international medical conference. Neither one speaks English terribly well, but it is the only language that they share. As the conference begins, the possibility of a romantic connection between them may be left to chance.

They were both planning the arrival of the new addition to the family when doctors told them of a cyst on the umbilical cord. After a few more tests, doctors felt they needed to deliver the baby immediately. Jacob was born 9 weeks early and started to show some early signs of kidney disease. This was the beginning of Jacob’s fight for his life.

Each year, 130 million Chinese workers return home to celebrate the New Year holiday, trekking hundreds of miles between industrialized cities to homes in the rural provinces. It’s the world’s largest human migration, and the only time many of these laborers see their families. Director Lixin Fan follows one family, the Zhangs, over two years, observing the heart-wrenching toll the parents’ faraway jobs have taken on family life. Yang and Suquin work in a clothing factory, stitching and serging a better future for their children. When their daughter, Qin, quits school to take a factory job they are devastated, their hopes that education would break the cycle of the family’s poverty dashed. Will Battersby has worked on projects as diverse as the documentaries “Trumbo” and “The War Within” to the long running British soap opera, “The East Enders”. Battersby will regale us with stories from the production front, working with Michael Douglas, Joan Allen, Cynthia Nixon and others. He will dig deeper into the reality of making indie films and getting them into festivals and securing domestic and international distribution.

“Making a film must always start with creative inspiration; an idea seizes you, a character just won’t leave you alone, there’s something you need to say. Then you are faced with the reality of the industry: it is a business. For your film to be seen, which is its intrinsic function, someone, somewhere must be able to profit by showing it.” This workshop will be a discussion with producer Will Battersby about strategies and thoughts on navigating those often-murky waters.

A partner in Reno Productions, he is currently in post-production on “The Bleeding” written and directed by graphic novel writer Philip Gelatt and “Certainty” directed by Peter Askin and written by Mike O’Malley. His documentary “Trumbo” starring Liam Neeson, Paul GIamatti, Michael Douglas and Donald Sutherland among others, was distributed by Samuel Goldwyn and went on to win the National Board of Review Freedom of Speech award.

His prior experience includes working at HDNet Films where he worked on such films as Alex Gibney’s “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Bubble”. Prior to that Battersby was a Motion Picture Literary Agent at International Creative Management where he represented writers and directors.

Howdy. I once again find myself under 150 year old maple tree on the lawn Of Weaver Street Market. The music of John and Bill playing rootsy blues this morning has an invigorating and inspiring effect.
It's been another creative and productive week. First up is the fact that we posted another episode of "Finish Line", our web series that asks folks from all walks of life "what happens when you die?". It is a lively series about death. This weeks episode is above and features a super sweet dog named Tasha. Tasha died just after the filming of this interview with her and her master, Lisa. She has an unknown tumor. She had absolutely no symptoms until hours before her passing. Very sad, but also fateful that we were fortunate to spend time with her and Lisa before she died.
The episode also features the wonderfully droll Ryan, who has no intention in saving for retirement, since every male in his family lineage has died before they turned 65.

In other news, The Carrboro Film Festival is still receiving short film submissions. It is great to watch and judge all the films that have been coming in. Some of them are jaw droppingly great. We just sent out our new short, 12, to about a dozen festivals. Exciting and scary. We will probably do more work on the film before it is really finished, but deadlines were looming for some fests that it would be exciting to see "12" in.

I am hoping to have a special sneak peek/cast & crew event in the near future in NC. Still working out those details. Then I will make "12" available for 12 hours online for those interested in seeing it and can't make the sneak peek party. I expect it all to be happening in October, when the weather has cooled and the festival season has begun.

In other news, submissions are now open for The Blue Sky Film Festival. This new fest will be Feb. 4-6, 2011 in Chapel Hill, NC. We are lookinf for independent, edgy and incredible films from the four corners of the globe. Shorts, features, narratives and documentaries are all welcome. As if that isn't enough, our web series, Finish Line, is gaining momentum. We post a new episode every two weeks. This series poses the question, "What happens when you die?" This may sound like a downer subject, but it really is uplifting, the interviewees are very candid in their answers and they share opinions and thoughts from all angles and beliefs.

I recently was able to get an interview with Tim LaFollett thanks to my friends Blake Faucet and Andy Coon and Tim himself. Tim has ALS and is the subject of Blake and Andy's incredible web series "Often Awesome". Very Exciting Pickle News

February is rolling along with several big doin's for us at BeeryMedia.com.

Our short film, BEN PICKLE, will screen twice this month. Saturday, Feb. 20th, Pickle will screen at the Hollywood Cinemas as part of the prestigious MAGNOLIA FILM FESTIVAL. Then on Feb. 25th, Ben Pickle will screen as part of a double comedy bill at the NC Comedy Arts Festival at the classic Varsity theatre in Chapel Hill, NC.

This is a podcast from a recent sold out screening of the 1928 Buster Keaton classic film, "Steamboat Bill, Jr." Carrboro, NC is fortunate to be the home of a monthly film series called "Century Center Cinema". They show silent, classic, foreign and documentaries. They are always wonderful movies and when silent's are shown, the music is improvised on the grand Piano by Erich Lieth.

This podcast features nuggets of good Keaton info by International Buster Keaton Society member Laura Nigro. Also included are scenes from the film and music by Lieth.

Full Frame Documentary Film Festival seeks volunteers for 13th annual event.

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, NC will hold it’s 13th edition on April 8th-11th. This world-class event attracts filmmakers and film lovers from around the world to our area. This year is promising to be our best festival yet.

We are presently seeking volunteers to help out in many areas including ushers, ticket takers, box office, photographers, drivers, IT support, set-up and tear down, and outreach.

Requirements are that you must attend two pre-fest meetings in the evening (in March) and work 3 five-hour shifts during the festival.

It's been quite a nice ride this summer and fall. We just wrapped the Clay Aiken National Inclusion Project Gala. It was an extraordinary time, producing two videos profiling special needs children and creating a very emotional video on the need for inclusion. Videos will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.

On the indie film scene, our short, FRAME, continues to do well on the international festival circuit. Film festival submissions continue to go out. we even have begun to get requests to submit from festivals. A good feeling for sure. Frame will be seen this weekend in Seguin Texas for example. I have been asked by IMDB to post trailers or complete films online. I like this idea, folks can watch my shorts right there. The delima is, where do I put my films? YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, IMDB? All of these, some of these...

At this moment I am leaning towards posting my shorts everywhere people want them. Vimeo is my site of choice, best quality, easiest access. But YouTube has the longest reach to the world, most people, like it or not, still go to YouTube first.

Then there is the cool factor of faceBook. Friends can comment and it really spreads like wild fire. So I like that too.

Vimeo and IMDB have a hip factor. Then there are specialty sites like Shooting People, Ticklebooth, Squiglebooth...oh my.

Hi. A lot has been happening this summer. I am happy that I am working with the National Incusion Project on their fall Capital Campaign. NIP was founded by American Idol alum Clay Aiken and he is a fun, smart and creative guy. The video shoot took us to Boston and Raleigh, NC. We are focusing on kids with special needs and how important it is to include them with typical kids in every possible way. In other work related news, I Christine Kittilstad and I have been contracted to do the award videos for the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials again. A great group, and it is always interesting to see what is happening with our American transportation system. My summer fun film, "Ben Pickle" is in post production. It's the story of a 12 year old boy who has quite an imagination. Think, "Scrubs" and "The Wonder Years" meets "The Wizard of Oz", and you'll have sort of an idea of what it's going to be like. The acting is wonderful, the script is whacked, and my friend Ish Abdelkhalek is going above and beyond with the special effects. Just wait til you see my head get whacked off for writing the script in the first place. I kid you not, that is part of the movie. Look for it to premiere on December 12th at CCCinema as the opening act before "A Christmas Story", Jean Shepard's wonderfully funny holiday classic.

Frame is playing Cannes!!!!

I just received word that Beery Media's latest short film, Frame, will be playing this week in Cannes. This is a huge milestone for me and this film.

The details are such, I submitted my film to a fringe group called "Cannes in a Van". This is a hip group of Londoners who for several years now, drive a van to a parking lot in the middle of Cannes, open the back doors and show films to the Cannes attendees. It has caught on and gotten a lot of industry attention. I am being told that studio executives and other industry insiders pay attention to this out of the box programming.

Bill Elias and I went to DC to work election week. Bill behind a camera and i directing some of the three camera news programs. It was a blast. The foreign bureaus we worked for were from England, Ireland, Spain, Romania, Germany and a few other spots around this blue globe of ours.

The White House is the magnet that draws everyone to the same spot on the roof of my former employer, Mobile Video Services. It was nice to go back and be with old friends.

In other news, "Boy with the wet thumb" has been selected to screen at this years Carrboro Film Festival. I am excited about this, since it is the first year I have not been directly involved with the fest and am eligible to have one of my shorts in this really cool fest. After a win at Secret City, we were surprised again with the "Bronze Pecan Award" at last weekends Seguin Film and Arts Festival in Texas. We are honored and happy that our film, "Veronica Always" is getting all this attention.

We were happy to hear that the Secret City Film Festival in TN selected our very own “Veronica Always” as this years “Best Family Film”. This is such a nice recognition of a beautiful short film. Secret City is gaining in reputation as one of the nation’s best film festivals. We will definitely continue to make films that have strong stories and production values. Of course, everyone involved with “V. Always” made this film so special. Especially the fine acting and dancing by Fallon, Sarah and Jon.

In other festival news, “V. Always” and “Boy with the wet thumb” have been selected for this years “Seguin Film Festival” in Texas.

We are finishing post production on Anita Mills short “Where There’s Smoke” and Mark Cornell’s “Sweet Dreams for Maisie”. Both films are spectacular and VERY different. It’s a pleasure to work with such creative folks. I can’t wait to see these on the big screen.

As for BeeryMedia productions, we just finished a short “song film” titled, “Which Way?” which will premiere at the Flicker film festival, Nov. 9th at 8pm in Chapel hill at the NightLight club on Rosemary. This film uses found 8mm footage and super 8 footage I shot in NYC back in 1997. It’s also on youtube and vimeo for you to enjoy online.

Our next short, “Frame”, will go before the camera in mid-November. This one stars my own kids, Kelly and Simon, so it’s a special family event.

As for other news, BeeryMedia has been tapped to produce from soup to nuts the new video for the popular english indie band, “The Crowd Scene”. All development ideas are under wraps until the label releases it, but I can say, this will not be your mother’s music video!

This is a song film. It's the story of one woman's search for a friend and for herself. She looks many, many places, over many decades. Some of the places she looks are the Grand Canyon, Kalamazoo College, New York City and a native american reservation. The footage spans many decades from the last century.

The song was written in 1983 by Anne Rogers and recorded in 2008 by her band, "The Crowd Scene". 8mm films were shot by a Falls Church, VA family while on a U.S. vacation in the 1940's. Sold at an estate sale in 2003. NYC footage shot by the filmmaker, circa 1997. Song film produced in 2008. All together it's almost 70 years in the making...and worth the wait."

Synopsis Elliot's wife Veronica died in 2006 and he misses her. She was his
fearless leader for 53 years. Laura, 22, works at Elliot's assisted living home and

Production Notes "Uncle Gene" My uncle Gene was living in an assisted living
home in rural Texas. He was in the final throes of pulmonary fibrosis, living on
tanks of oxygen. After visiting him, I drove by an ugly old repair shop carport and
the thought occurred to me, how can I take something so ugly and make it
beautiful? With my uncle weighing on my mind, I almost instantly combined
ballet, ugly carport and uncle Gene, who I love. The result is this short.

i think it was subconscious because not all Tom Maxwell songs are about pigs. But I just happened to select these two first. This one is about the three lil pigs. Tom Maxwell, former Squirrel Nut Zipper, performs at The Bynum General Store on July 18th, 2008. This song is about a woman, a ham and linoleum. Genius! I will be posting more from this great show as I catch a chance between editing gigs. I know you will enjoy this, Tom is a strong songwriter and performer. In fact, one of the songs he wrote for the Zippers, "Hell", went pretty high on the charts.

Mad Tea Party Doc, Part 1

In 2006 I was looking for a topic for a new and
different documentary. I found a fun, irreverent band
out of Asheville, NC. I saw them perform a few times
and then asked them if I could produce a one hour
documentary on them. After spending several months
following them from gig to gig and radio station's to
their day jobs, I settled into the edit suite for a
couple months of editing. What I came out with was a
great portrait of three folks who live a wonderful and
creative lifestyle in and out of the band.

I am posting this doc in its entirety on youtube. I
will post this in 6 segments over the course of two
months, April and May 2008.

The band has had a few iterations since I made this
doc. As of this writing, Lora Pendleton is no longer
in the band. Ami and Jason are now a duo. I feel
very lucky to have captured The Mad Tea Party in this
particular trio configuration. The characters are
interesting, compelling, quirky. Enjoy The Mad Tea
Party circa 2006. If they are playing near you, go see
the live version.

Some of the friends featured in this documentary are Ami Worthen, Jason Krekel, Lora Pendleton, Sean Foley, Todd E. Gaul, Snake Oil Medicine Show, Firecracker Jazz Band, Berkley Grimbal.

Hi. I made a documentary about an incredible band out of Asheville, NC back in 2006. Their name is The Mad Tea Party. My buddy Ish and I followed them around for a few months and made a really nice portrait of a great band. Unfortunately personnel changes made it hard to distribute. I am seriously thinking about posting the whole doc in 6 parts over the next few months on youtube. I think it will be well received. Budddayy Remix gets a retro Video

So the interview i cut up and made into a dance track was screaming for a video to go with it. Kip Reynolds, my old circus buddy granted me permish to use this 1985 VHS footage of him doing the dance of the pink feline. He was out of costume of course for this one. Helping him out is Bobby "circus boy" Hunt. Both were freshly shaven, the kind of thing you do on a bet. Thank god for youtube!

You will either get it or you won't, there is no in between on this video. It's a wonderfully funny memory lane thing for many of us old circus farts. Enjoy!
